CHAPTER 24

Georgie and Garrow made their way out of Llancastell and headed out towards Llwydiarth. Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down at it. Yet another flirty text from DCI Kevin Finnan, whom she and Jim had met up with in Liverpool. Georgie had got his number from his card, and now they were texting each other and arranging to meet up.

Garrow seemed lost in thought as they traversed the narrow country lanes out towards Llwydiarth.

‘Have you got a girlfriend, Jim?’ Georgie asked, breaking the long silence.

‘No,’ Garrow replied. He seemed slightly taken aback by the bluntness of her question. ‘Not at the moment.’

Garrow laughed as he looked at her.

‘What?’ she said with a slightly defensive expression.

‘You really don’t have any filter, do you?’

‘I don’t see the point.’

‘Tact? Sensitivity? Subtlety?’ Garrow suggested.

‘Fuck that,’ Georgie chortled. ‘Life’s too short to pussyfoot around.’

They turned the corner and pulled up outside Bella Freudmann’s house.

There was a white transit van on the drive, which had L&D Brothers Builders and Decorators printed on the side in navy letters. Beside that was a smaller red escort van for a local carpet company.

Georgie pulled a face as they got out of the car. ‘Strange time to get your house decorated and re-carpeted.’

Garrow shrugged. ‘I guess it was a pre-standing arrangement.’

Walking up the garden path, Georgie saw that the front door was propped open to let the workmen and decorators come and go.

‘Hello?’ Georgie called as she and Garrow went in and stood in the doorway.

‘Have you found him yet?’ asked a voice.

Bella, wearing a long coat, appeared on the stairs and came down. She was wearing virtually no make-up, and her hair was scrapped back under a sheepskin, trapper’s style hat with long ear flaps. She seemed tired and drawn.

‘Not yet, I’m afraid,’ Garrow replied.

‘Well, I hope he’s crawled back under the rock he came from,’ Bella said with a twisted mouth.

‘Looks like you’ve got your hands full?’ Georgie observed as a one of the workmen passed her on the stairs.

‘Oh, I know.’ Bella rolled her eyes. ‘With everything that’s happened, I completely forgot they were coming. They’ve been booked in for months. Just a bit of prep work today and measuring up. Should be gone by lunchtime, thank God.’

Garrow gave her a look as if to say, I told you.

‘What are you having done?’ Georgie asked. Something told her that Bella was lying to them.

‘Just the master bedroom,’ Bella replied with a forced smile. ‘Of course, the irony of the timing isn’t lost on me as that twat has just left me ... I’m just off to take the dogs for a walk, so is there something I can help you with?’

Garrow gave her an awkward look. ‘I know you’ve been through a lot, but we are going to need something with Mark’s DNA.’

Bella’s face fell. ‘Really? This is utterly ridiculous.’

‘Sorry,’ Garrow said with an apologetic shrug. ‘It’s just part of the procedure in an investigation like this.’

Bella narrowed her eyes. ‘Essentially, you’re calling me and my brother a liar.
